The Route

This trek traverses the entire Western Himalaya, starting at Dharchula on the western border of Nepal, it cuts through the dense knot of the Nanda Devi and Gangotri group of mountains, crosses into the valleys of Lahaul and eventually ends at Kargil.

We will cross the regions of Kumaon, Garhwal, Lahaul, Spiti and Zanskar.

We will be trekking from Sobala to Harsil, around 400 kilometres and then mountain biking from Harsil to Kargil, around 700 kilometres.

A rough estimate indicates that the route is just over 1000 kilometres long and will take around three months, between June to August 2007, to complete.

The route involves crossing nearly a dozen passes over 5000 metres. The crossing of Traill’s Pass poses the greatest technical challenge, although I suspect that logistics and bureaucracy will prove to be an even bigger one!
